6. Cumberland Gap

Because of its geographic link to Chadwell’s Station, this tune had to be included. Jabbour lists 32 recordings of it in the Library of Congress. Oral history suggests the tune dates far back into the 19th century, but “though it bears resemblance to certain Irish reels, its origin remains unclear. (Titon, 64) The setting is from Hiram Stamper, who tunes his fiddle, at least for the 1989 recording, D#CFC.
